How to Write a Poem: Four New Poetry Vessel Videos

Hello, poet! Nathan here.

Over the last month, we’ve released four new videos covering a range of topics on The Poetry Vessel YouTube Channel. I’ve linked each episode below so you can dive right in.

Here is a synopsis of each poetry video, numbered:

1. How to Write Nature Poetry (Without Clichés)

Rachael and I hike through St. Leonard’s Forest in West Sussex and set up a couple of camping chairs in the woods. We sit down, read a classic Rudyard Kipling poem, discuss local dragon-slaying mythologies, and explore practical techniques on how to write nature poetry that feels alive, sensory, and rooted in the land (20 mins).

2. How to Become a Better Poet Through Deep Listening

Ah, we have two ears and one mouth! I speak frequently about how one of the core skills of a good poet is being a great listener—not just to other people, but to the world and rhythms around you. In this episode, I discuss how to open not only your physical ears, but your imaginal ear to unlock deeper poetry writing (13 mins).

3. What School Gets Wrong About Poetry (And How to Fall in Love With It)

I hear a lot of people complain that school completely ruined their love of reading and writing poetry. Of course, there are exceptions where folks had wonderful teachers (shout out to all the brilliant educators out there!).

In this video, we discuss how you can fall in love with poetry again if school put you off, along with some of the writing techniques I use when teaching poetry in schools to keep students engaged and in love with the art form (27 mins).

4. Five Essential Poetry Anthologies I Recommend

Looking for some inspiration or new poets to read? Look no further! In this video, I share my top poetry anthology recommendations to keep you inspired, enchanted, and writing throughout the rest of the year (10 mins).
